What is TMS?
TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. It is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression and other mental health conditions.
How effective is TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been shown to be an effective treatment option for individuals struggling with depression and other mental health conditions, especially when traditional treatments like medication or therapy haven’t brought relief. Many patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms, and some achieve full remission. While results can vary from person to person, TMS is backed by clinical research and is FDA-cleared for treatment-resistant depression and other conditions. At Texas 360 TMS Lakeway, we tailor each treatment plan to your unique needs to help you achieve the best possible outcome.
How does the TMS machine work?
A TMS machine uses electromagnetic induction to stimulate specific brain regions. Here’s how it works:
- The machine contains a large capacitor charged to approximately 2,000 volts that delivers pulses of strong electrical current (around 7,000 amps) through a figure-8 shaped coil positioned against your scalp.
- As this current moves through the coil, it produces a powerful but brief magnetic field (about 2 Tesla — comparable in strength to an MRI machine) that passes painlessly through your skull.
- This time-varying magnetic field generates a much smaller electrical field in the brain tissue below (about 1 volt per centimeter). Once this electrical field reaches a certain threshold, it causes neurons in that targeted brain region to fire.
- Modern TMS machines use a figure-8 coil design that produces a more concentrated stimulation point where the two circles meet, enabling precise targeting of specific brain regions.
The magnetic field can penetrate about 2-3 centimeters into the brain, making it possible to reach areas responsible for mood regulation. These pulses are delivered in carefully timed patterns throughout each session to help restore normal brain activity in depression.
Think of it as a highly focused magnetic pulse that temporarily activates specific brain circuits — much like a conductor using a baton to cue individual sections of an orchestra.

TMS therapy has a well-established safety profile. Its safety is consistently supported by meta-analyses across published clinical literature, and it holds FDA clearance as a treatment for depression. Thousands of patients have undergone TMS with minimal side effects reported.

Yes! At our Lakeway location, we are currently in-network with Optum, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Aetna, Ambetter, Baylor Scott and White, and Magellan. We continue to expand our network partnerships with additional major insurance providers. If your plan isn’t listed, private-pay options are available. How much does TMS cost without insurance?
Texas 360 TMS Lakeway is currently offering TMS treatment on a discounted private-pay basis for those whose insurance we are not yet in network with.
We are committed to making high-quality, personalized TMS care accessible to the Lakeway community, and private-pay patients will benefit from exclusive advantages when insurance coverage is not available.
Each TMS session is discounted at $150. While not required, we recommend completing a full course of TMS treatment consisting of 36 sessions. An ideal treatment course includes 30 sessions at a rate of 3-5 sessions per week, followed by 6 sessions at 2 sessions per week. Private-pay patients will receive guidance on maximizing their cost-to-benefit ratio by evaluating their progress after two weeks of treatment, which is a key indicator of overall response at the conclusion of 36 sessions.
